BIT vs BSc CSIT in Nepal (2026): Entrance, Scope, Salary & Which to Choose
You passed +2, you want a career in IT, and two names keep coming up: BIT and BSc CSIT. Every college gives you a different answer, usually the one that suits the college. This guide gives you the version that suits you, with the entrance rules, the real difference in what you study, what each pays, and the one detail most admission offices skip: you can do BIT without any entrance exam, and you cannot do that with CSIT.
Short version if you're in a hurry. Choose BSc CSIT if you're from a science background, you like mathematics, and you want the deepest, most technical computer science degree. Choose BIT if you want a strong IT career with less math, more applied and management skills, and a path that's open to any +2 stream. BSc CSIT is Tribhuvan University's most technical IT degree, run under the Institute of Science and Technology (IOST). It runs four years across eight semesters, and the curriculum is modeled on international computer science degrees. That means it goes deep: algorithms, operating system internals, compiler design, discrete mathematics, artificial intelligence fundamentals, and heavy programming.
Two things define CSIT. First, eligibility is strict. You need a +2 Science background, specifically Physics and Mathematics in Grade 11 and 12. If you did Management or Humanities, CSIT is closed to you, full stop. Second, the entrance is hard. The IOST entrance pulls questions from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English, and Computer Science, and for a seat in the popular government colleges like Amrit (ASCOL), Patan, or Bhaktapur Multiple, students typically need around 85 out of 100. You need at least 35% just to pass.
CSIT suits a specific student: science stream, comfortable with math, willing to grind through theory for a degree that carries strong weight in software engineering, AI, and technical roles, and a slight edge for a STEM master's abroad.
BIT, Bachelor of Information Technology, is also a four-year, eight-semester program. Where CSIT goes deep into computer science theory, BIT goes wide: networking, system administration, databases, e-commerce, and information security, combined with management subjects like economics and marketing. It's often called the "silent winner" of Nepal's IT degrees because it produces graduates who can handle both the systems and the business side, which is exactly what banks, fintech firms, and corporates want in an IT officer.
Now the part that trips up almost every student, because most articles get it wrong. There are two kinds of BIT in Nepal.
TU BIT (under IOST). Open to any +2 stream, but with a catch: you must have studied Mathematics (100 full marks) or Computer Science (100 full marks) plus English in +2. It requires an entrance exam, though a lighter one than CSIT, usually 50 marks of Maths or Computer and 50 marks of English.
Foreign-affiliated BIT. Programs like the BIT at Padmashree College, affiliated with Nilai University, Malaysia, admit directly on your +2 results with no entrance exam at all, and they're open across streams. Same degree name, internationally recognised, but a completely different, entrance-free route in.
That difference is the whole reason a lot of students who "missed" the IOST cutoff still end up with a BIT degree and a good IT job. If the entrance exam is your barrier, foreign-affiliated BIT removes it.
This deserves its own heading because it's the single most searched worry after +2 results. Yes, you can study BIT without an entrance exam. TU BIT requires one; foreign-affiliated BIT does not. CSIT is the "how computers work" degree. Expect discrete math, data structures and algorithms, operating systems, computer architecture, compiler design, numerical methods, and AI. It's rigorous and theory-first, with labs and projects layered on.
BIT is the "how IT runs a business" degree. Expect programming and databases, but alongside networking, system administration, information security, e-commerce, web technologies, and management papers. Less proving theorems, more building and running working systems.
Neither is "easier" in a way that matters. CSIT is harder if math and theory aren't your strength. BIT is demanding in its own way if you engage with it seriously. Pick the one whose daily work you'd actually enjoy, because that's what determines whether you finish strong.
Here's the reassuring truth: both degrees lead into Nepal's growing IT sector, and employers care more about your portfolio than your degree's name.
CSIT graduates lean toward software engineering, backend and systems development, data and AI roles, and research tracks. The theory foundation ages well, which matters as new technology arrives. CSIT also carries strong demand at officer level in government jobs through Lok Sewa.
BIT graduates move into IT officer roles, network and system administration, database administration, IT support and infrastructure, and increasingly fintech and digital banking, where the mix of technical and management skills is prized. The applied focus means BIT graduates are often workplace-ready faster.
This surprises people who assume CSIT automatically pays more. It doesn't, at entry level. Fresh graduates from both degrees in Nepal commonly start in a similar range, roughly NPR 25,000 to 50,000 per month, and the deciding factor is your skills and portfolio, not the letters on your certificate. A BIT graduate with strong projects out-earns a CSIT graduate with none, and the reverse is equally true. Specialisation later (cloud, security, data, software architecture) is what moves you up, on either path.
Both are four-year degrees recognised for master's study in Nepal and abroad. CSIT sometimes carries a slight psychological edge in visa processing as a clearly STEM-labeled science degree, which is worth knowing if a US or Australian master's is your goal. BIT graduates also progress to MSc IT, MIS, or MBA-IT routes. If abroad is the plan, factor this in, but don't over-weight it: a strong profile matters more than the degree label.
