2. The four IT degrees in Nepal : and which is right for you

Before you compare colleges, you need to understand what you are studying. In Nepal, the four most common IT bachelor's degrees are very different in structure, length, entrance requirements, and career path. Picking the wrong degree at the right college is worse than picking the right degree at the second-best college.

BIT : Bachelor of Information Technology

A 4-year (8-semester) program focused on the infrastructure side of IT : networking, system administration, database management, cybersecurity, and software development. BIT is the closest equivalent in Nepal to a generalist "IT degree" in the international sense.

  • Offered by: Tribhuvan University (TU), Purbanchal University (PU), and several foreign universities (Nilai, Sunderland, Wolverhampton, Lincoln, Westcliff)
  • TU BIT entrance: IOST (Institute of Science and Technology) : historically very competitive
  • Foreign-affiliated BIT: No TU IOST required : admission based on +2 marks and college-level interview
  • Best for: Students who want a broad IT foundation that opens doors into networking, cybersecurity, IT management, system administration, and programming
  • Career outcomes in Nepal: IT Officer, Network Administrator, System Analyst, Junior Software Engineer, Cybersecurity Analyst (entry roles starting around NPR 25,000–60,000/month in 2026)

BCA : Bachelor of Computer Application

A 4-year (8-semester) program offered under TU's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. BCA is more software-development focused than BIT : heavier on programming, web development, and application building.

  • Offered by: Tribhuvan University (TU) : currently 56 colleges in Kathmandu run TU BCA, with 35 seats per private college per year
  • Entrance: TU BCA entrance exam (mandatory)
  • Best for: Students whose dream job is "I want to build software / apps / websites"
  • Career outcomes in Nepal: Software Developer, Web Developer, Mobile App Developer, UI/UX Designer (entry NPR 25,000–60,000/month, can scale to NPR 1.5L+ with strong portfolios and remote international work)

BSc CSIT : Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology

A 4-year, math-and-science-heavy program from TU. Considered the most theoretically rigorous IT degree in Nepal.

  • Offered by: Tribhuvan University (TU) : through select constituent and affiliated colleges
  • Eligibility: +2 Science with Mathematics, minimum 50%
  • Entrance: TU IOST CSIT entrance exam : historically one of the most competitive entrances in Nepal
  • Best for: Students with a strong math/science background who want a rigorous CS foundation, possibly heading into research, AI/ML, data science, or international Master's programs
  • Career outcomes: Software Engineer, Data Scientist, AI/ML Engineer, Researcher

BCS / BSc IT (Foreign-Affiliated)

Bachelor of Computer Science / BSc in Information Technology programs run in Nepal under foreign university affiliation : typically Malaysian, UK, or US universities (Taylor's, Nilai, Sunderland, Wolverhampton, Westcliff, APU).

  • Duration: Usually 3 to 4 years
  • Entrance: No standardized national entrance : college-level interview based on +2 marks
  • Best for: Students who want an internationally recognized degree without leaving Nepal, with cleaner credit-transfer pathways for further study abroad
  • Career outcomes: Comparable to BIT/BCA in Nepal; stronger leverage if you plan to do Master's in UK/USA/Australia/Malaysia

Quick rule of thumb

  • Love coding, want to build software? → BCA or BSc CSIT (CSIT if you have +2 Science with Maths)
  • Want a broad IT generalist degree (networks, security, systems, some programming)? → BIT
  • Want an internationally recognized degree, planning to study abroad later? → Foreign-affiliated BIT / BSc IT / BCS
  • Didn't clear (or don't want to sit) the TU IOST entrance? → Foreign-affiliated BIT (see Section 5 below)

3. The honest list : top IT colleges in Kathmandu by category

There is no single "best" IT college in Kathmandu, because the right college depends on which degree you want, what you can afford, and where in the city you can realistically commute to. Here is the honest breakdown.

A. Best for TU-affiliated BIT (with entrance exam)

TU has granted BIT affiliation to a small number of colleges. These are the most competitive seats in Nepal : for context, only the top ~300 IOST BIT scorers typically secure admission.

  • Amrit Science Campus (ASCOL), Thamel : 36 seats. Most students' first choice; intense competition.
  • Patan Multiple Campus, Patan Dhoka : 76 seats (highest among TU BIT colleges).
  • Bhaktapur Multiple Campus, Doodhpati : 36 seats. The third TU BIT campus in Kathmandu Valley.
  • Padma Kanya Multiple Campus, Bagbazar : Women's campus.
  • Prime College, Nayabazar : Strong placement reputation.

Total fees at TU BIT government-affiliated campuses are typically NPR 3.5–4 lakh, making them outstanding value : if you can clear the entrance.

B. Best for foreign-affiliated BIT (no TU IOST entrance)

This is where your options widen significantly. These colleges run BIT (or equivalent BSc IT) programs under partnerships with overseas universities. The degree comes from the foreign university, and the program is taught in Nepal.

  • Padmashree  College, Tinkune : BIT under Nilai University, Malaysia. Established 2007. No entrance exam required at college level. MoE-recognized, equivalent to TU.
  • ISMT College, Tinkune : BSc (Hons) Computer Systems Engineering under University of Sunderland, UK. Padmashree's neighbour and long-running BIT program in Tinkune.
  • Islington College, Kamalpokhari : BSc (Hons) Computing under London Metropolitan University, UK.
  • The British College, Thapathali : BSc Computing under UK universities. Premium positioning, premium fees.
  • Herald College, Naxal : BSc (Hons) Computer Science under University of Wolverhampton, UK.
  • MIT College, Bagbazar : BIT under Westcliff University, USA / IAU.
  • LBEF, Sinamangal : BSc IT and BBIT under Asia Pacific University, Malaysia.
  • Texas College of Management and IT, Sifal : BIT under Lincoln University College, Malaysia.

C. Best for TU BCA

TU BCA is the most popular IT degree in Nepal by sheer student numbers. With 56 colleges in Kathmandu running BCA and 35 seats per private college, getting into a good BCA college matters more than getting into BCA itself.

  • Padmashree International College, Tinkune : TU BCA, 35 seats. International curriculum exposure through co-located Nilai programs.
  • Thames International College, Old Baneshwor : Strong BCA placement reputation.
  • Texas International College, Mitrapark : BCA + BSc CSIT, content-heavy presence online.
  • KCMIT, Putalisadak : Established BCA player.
  • Prime College, Nayabazar : TU BCA + BSc CSIT.
  • Kathford International College of Engineering & Management : BCA + Engineering exposure.
  • Divya Gyan College, Putalisadak : "Earn while you learn" BCA model.

D. Best for BSc CSIT

BSc CSIT requires +2 Science with Mathematics. The flagship CSIT colleges in Kathmandu are:

  • St. Xavier's College, Maitighar : Strong academic brand, very competitive.
  • Deerwalk Institute of Technology (DWIT), Sifal : Industry-backed (Deerwalk Inc., USA), considered among the top private CSIT colleges in Nepal.
  • Prime College, Nayabazar : TU CSIT.
  • Texas International College, Mitrapark : TU CSIT.
  • Nepal College of Information Technology (NCIT), Balkumari : Engineering-leaning IT.

Where Padmashree fits in this list

Padmashree College is the right answer for you if:

  • You want a 4-year BIT degree from Nilai University, Malaysia : internationally recognized, MoE-equivalent to TU , with no entrance exam at the college level
  • You want a TU BCA at a college that actually has international exposure (because Nilai BBA, BIT, and BABHM programs run on the same campus)
  • You want Tinkune location : central Kathmandu, walking distance from Koteshwor, 10 minutes from Tribhuvan International Airport, easy public transport from Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, and the eastern Kathmandu suburbs
  • You want B.Tech Food Technology : Padmashree is one of the few private colleges in Kathmandu running TU's 4-year B.Tech Food program

Padmashree is not the right answer for you if:

  • You specifically want BSc CSIT : Padmashree does not offer CSIT (consider Deerwalk, Prime, Texas, St. Xavier's instead)
  • You want a UK-affiliated computing degree specifically : consider ISMT, Islington, Herald, or TBC
  • You want the cheapest possible BIT and you can clear the TU IOST entrance : go to Amrit Science or Patan Multiple Campus

We are confident enough in Padmashree's fit that we are willing to tell you when another college is the better choice. That clarity is the whole point of an honest guide.

4. Fees in 2026 : what you actually pay

Fee transparency is rare in Nepal's college landscape. Here is what total program fees actually look like for IT degrees in Kathmandu in 2026, based on published admission notices and aggregator data:

Program

Fee range

What drives the difference

TU BIT (government colleges)

NPR 3.5L – 4L

Foreign-affiliated BIT (USA : Westcliff, IAU)

NPR 9L – 13L

American degree positioning

At Padmashree, total program fees for BIT (Nilai University, Malaysia) and BCA (TU) sit comfortably in the affordable mid-range for international and TU programs respectively. We publish exact fee structures on each program page and through our admission counsellor : call +977-1-4112252 or visit our Tinkune campus, and we will give you the full breakdown including any scholarship you may qualify for.

A genuine principle for parents reading this: a college that won't tell you the total fee until after you've filled the inquiry form is hiding something. Padmashree's fee structure is published; ask any college you shortlist for theirs in writing before you decide.

5. The "no entrance exam" path : for students without TU IOST

This is the section that the rest of the IT-college articles in Nepal don't write honestly. Let's address it directly.

Every year, thousands of +2 graduates sit the TU IOST entrance for BIT and BSc CSIT. Of these, only a small fraction secure seats in their preferred college. For BIT specifically, only the top ~300 scorers reliably get into Amrit Science Campus and Patan Multiple Campus.

If you are in the position of having sat the IOST entrance and not got the result you hoped for : or if you are choosing not to sit it at all : you are not out of options for an IT career. Foreign-affiliated BIT programs in Nepal exist precisely for this scenario.

How foreign-affiliated BIT admission works

  • No standardized entrance exam at the national level
  • Admission is based on +2 marks (typically 45% minimum aggregate, with English at 45% or above)
  • College-level interview, sometimes a written test
  • Document verification (NEB transcript, character certificate, citizenship)
  • Apply directly to the college; admission decision usually within 1–2 weeks

What you get

  • A 4-year Bachelor of Information Technology degree
  • Awarded directly by the foreign partner university (e.g., Nilai University, Malaysia)
  • MoE-recognized in Nepal : equivalent to TU's 70% standard
  • Eligible for Master's admission anywhere in the world that recognizes the issuing university

What to verify before joining any foreign-affiliated college

  1. Is the affiliating university real and accredited in its home country? Cross-check on the awarding university's official website.
  2. Has the program received Recognition / Equivalence from Nepal's Curriculum Development Centre / UGC Nepal? This is the official MoE-equivalence step.
  3. Has the college actually graduated students in this degree? Ask for alumni names and current employers : and verify on LinkedIn.
  4. Are the classes in Nepal taught by the foreign university's curriculum, or a "modified" local version? It should be the partner university's curriculum.
  5. Where will the certificate be issued from : Nepal or the partner country? It should come from the partner university.

Padmashree's BIT program is offered under direct franchise affiliation with Nilai University, Malaysia. The degree certificate is issued by Nilai University. It is recognized by Nepal's MoE through Curriculum Development Centre equivalence and is widely accepted by Nepali employers and Master's admission offices abroad. Students can verify all of this with us before applying : bring your questions to the admission desk.

6. Location matters : and most guides ignore this

The IT college you choose is somewhere you will commute to 6 days a week for 4 years. Where it sits on the Kathmandu map matters more than most students realize when they're 17 and exhilarated by an admission letter.

The IT-college clusters in Kathmandu

  • Tinkune cluster: Padmashree, ISMT, and the broader Tinkune–Koteshwor–Sinamangal corridor. Strengths: Central, just off the Ring Road, 10 minutes from Tribhuvan International Airport, 5 minutes from Koteshwor, easy bus and microbus connectivity from Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, and eastern Kathmandu. Considerations: Traffic congestion at peak hours.
  • Putalisadak cluster: KCMIT, KCC, Divya Gyan, several BCA colleges. Strengths: Walking distance to Bagbazar, Maitighar, and the Ratnapark area; central student culture. Considerations: Older buildings, parking is difficult.
  • New Baneshwor / Old Baneshwor cluster: Thames International, Presidential Business School, Nami College, Techspire. Strengths: Modern buildings, food and study cafe scene. Considerations: Higher rent for hostels.
  • Maitighar / Thapathali cluster: St. Xavier's, The British College. Strengths: Premium institutional brands, central location. Considerations: Premium fees.
  • Outer pockets: Deerwalk (Sifal), Texas (Mitrapark), Herald (Naxal), Islington (Kamalpokhari), NCIT (Balkumari), LBEF (Sinamangal). Each has its own commute story : verify before committing.

Practical commute test

Before you commit to any college, do this once: take public transport from your home to the college at 8:00 AM on a working day. Time the entire trip. Repeat at 5:00 PM. If either leg crosses 90 minutes, you are signing up for a tough four years : reconsider, or factor in hostel costs.

For students from Bhaktapur, Thimi, Lokanthali, Suryabinayak, and the eastern suburbs, Tinkune-area colleges are the natural fit : the Ring Road feeds straight into Tinkune Chowk. For students from Lalitpur, Pulchowk, Patan Dhoka and Sankhamul, Patan Dhoka, Maitighar, and Thapathali colleges minimize commute. For students from Swayambhu, Balaju, and Banasthali, Putalisadak, Naxal, and Kamalpokhari are most accessible.

This is not a marketing point. It's the difference between four years of energy spent learning vs. four years of energy spent commuting.

7. Career outcomes : what an IT degree in Kathmandu actually leads to

This is the section parents skip to. Be honest with them.

Starting salaries in Nepal (2026)

Based on conversations with HR teams across Nepali IT firms and industry job boards (KumariJob, Merojob, JobsNepal):

Role

QA / Software Tester

20,000 – 35,000

45,000 – 75,000

Network Administrator / IT Officer

22,000 – 40,000

50,000 – 85,000

Cybersecurity Analyst

30,000 – 55,000

25,000 – 45,000

55,000 – 95,000

Salaries scale fastest with portfolio quality, not degree title. A BCA graduate with three live projects on GitHub and one open-source contribution will out-earn a BSc CSIT graduate with only coursework : every time. We see this every year with our own alumni.

Top employers hiring IT graduates from Kathmandu colleges

Deerwalk, Leapfrog Technology, Fusemachines, Cotiviti, F1Soft, eSewa, Khalti, IME Pay, Daraz, Logpoint, CloudFactory, NIC Asia (IT division), Nabil Bank (IT operations), Verisk Nepal, InfoDevelopers, Yipl, Fusemachines, Genesys, Insight Workshop, plus the growing remote-international segment (Toptal, Upwork, freelance contracts with US/EU agencies).

Study abroad after an IT degree in Nepal

This is increasingly important. Roughly half of all IT graduates from Kathmandu colleges pursue a Master's abroad : most commonly USA, Australia, UK, and (in recent years) Germany.

  • TU BIT / BCA / BSc CSIT are accepted at most international universities, with credit evaluation through WES (USA/Canada) or NARIC (UK).
  • Foreign-affiliated BIT (e.g., Nilai, Sunderland, Wolverhampton) offers cleaner credit transfer because the issuing university already exists in the destination country's recognition systems.
  • STEM designation in the USA can favour BSc CSIT applicants slightly during visa processing : but this is not decisive; portfolio and English scores matter more.

For students at Padmashree, the Nilai University, Malaysia degree gives a clean credit-transfer pathway into Master's programs in the UK, Australia, USA, Canada, and across the Asia-Pacific. We help interested students with the application paperwork in their final year.

8. How to actually choose : the 7-question checklist

Skip everything else and answer these seven questions honestly. Your best-fit IT college will fall out of your answers.

  1. Have I cleared (or am I confident of clearing) the TU IOST entrance?
    • Yes → TU BIT or TU BSc CSIT at a government campus is your best value.
    • No, or don't want to sit it → Foreign-affiliated BIT (Padmashree, ISMT, Islington, Herald, MIT, etc.).
  2. Do I want a TU degree or a foreign degree?
    • TU degree → BIT/BCA/CSIT.
    • Foreign degree → Pick by country preference and fees (Malaysian < UK < US in cost).
  3. What is my real budget for total fees?
    • Below NPR 5L → TU government BIT, TU BCA, or affordable foreign-affiliated BIT (Nilai partners).
    • NPR 5L–8L → Most TU CSIT/BCA, mid-range foreign-affiliated programs.
    • Above NPR 8L → UK/USA-affiliated programs.
  4. Do I want to code, or do I want to manage IT systems?
    • Code → BCA or BSc CSIT.
    • Manage / generalist → BIT.
  5. What's my one-way commute time to my shortlisted college?
    • Under 45 min → Excellent.
    • 45–75 min → Manageable.
    • Over 75 min → Reconsider, or budget for hostel.
  6. Have I actually visited the campus?
    • If no, do it before you fill any form. Walk through the labs. Talk to a current student. Sit in on a class if they allow it. Padmashree allows campus visits without an appointment during admission season : most good colleges do.
  7. Have I asked the college for the names of 3 alumni and verified them on LinkedIn?
    • If they can't or won't share, that's the answer.

9. Frequently asked questions

Which is the best IT college in Kathmandu?

There is no single best IT college in Kathmandu : it depends on the degree you want, your entrance exam status, and your budget. For TU BIT, Amrit Science Campus and Patan Multiple Campus are top choices if you clear the IOST entrance. For foreign-affiliated BIT without an entrance exam, Padmashree College (Tinkune, Nilai University Malaysia), ISMT, and Islington are all strong choices. For BSc CSIT, Deerwalk, St. Xavier's, and Prime College lead.

Which IT degree is best for getting a job in Nepal : BIT, BCA, or BSc CSIT?

All three lead to similar starting salaries (NPR 25,000–60,000/month for entry roles). Hiring managers prioritize portfolio and skills over degree title. BCA is favoured for software development roles, BIT for IT generalist and infrastructure roles, and BSc CSIT for research-heavy and AI/ML roles. Pick the degree whose curriculum best matches the work you actually want to do.

Can I do BIT in Nepal without an entrance exam?

Yes. Foreign-affiliated BIT programs in Nepal : including Padmashree's BIT under Nilai University Malaysia : admit students without a national-level entrance exam. Admission is based on +2 marks (typically 45% minimum) and a college-level interview. The TU BIT route requires the TU IOST entrance.

What is the total fee for BIT in Kathmandu?

TU BIT at government colleges costs around NPR 3.5–4 lakh for the full 4 years. Foreign-affiliated BIT programs typically range NPR 4.5L–13L total, depending on the partner country. Malaysian-affiliated programs (Nilai, Lincoln, APU) sit in the NPR 4.5L–8L range. UK-affiliated programs (Sunderland, Wolverhampton, London Metropolitan) sit in the NPR 8L–13L range.

Is Padmashree College good for IT?

Padmashree College has been running BIT under Nilai University Malaysia and TU BCA since 2007. It is located in Tinkune, Kathmandu, accepts students for BIT without an entrance exam, and is a reasonable fit for students seeking an internationally-recognized IT degree at affordable fees in central Kathmandu. It is not the right fit for students who specifically want BSc CSIT (Padmashree does not offer CSIT) or a UK/US-only-affiliated degree. Your honest fit depends on your goals : visit the campus before deciding.

Is Nilai University degree valid in Nepal?

Yes. Nilai University, Malaysia is recognized by Nepal's Ministry of Education through the Curriculum Development Centre equivalence process. The Bachelor of Information Technology from Nilai is treated as equivalent to TU 70% for the purpose of further studies and government job applications in Nepal.

Which college is best for BCA in Kathmandu?

TU BCA runs at 56 colleges in Kathmandu, with 35 seats per private college. The most respected private BCA colleges include Padmashree International College (Tinkune), Thames International (Old Baneshwor), Texas International (Mitrapark), KCMIT (Putalisadak), and Prime College (Nayabazar). Government BCA seats at TU constituent colleges fill via the TU BCA entrance exam.

Which is the best BIT college in Tinkune?

The two main BIT colleges in Tinkune, Kathmandu are Padmashree International College (BIT under Nilai University, Malaysia) and ISMT College (BSc Hons Computer Systems Engineering under University of Sunderland, UK). They differ in affiliation country, curriculum, and fees : Padmashree's Malaysian affiliation typically results in lower total fees, while ISMT's UK affiliation is positioned at premium pricing. Both are reachable on foot from each other; visit both before deciding.

When does IT college admission open in Kathmandu for 2026?

For TU BIT and BSc CSIT, the IOST entrance application window typically opens in Shrawan–Bhadra (mid-July to mid-September). For TU BCA, the entrance application typically opens in Bhadra (late August / September). For foreign-affiliated BIT programs, admission for the September intake usually opens by July; secondary intakes run in January and June at most foreign-affiliated colleges. Check each college's official admission notice for the current cycle's exact dates.

Can I switch from BCA to BIT (or vice versa) after the first year?

Generally no : these are different degrees with different syllabi, different affiliations, and (often) different universities. Switching means starting again from semester 1 of the new program. Choose carefully at the start. If you're unsure, talk to the admission counsellor about which program your interests genuinely match.
